  THE CROTTY QUESTION

Dear Friends:

Every ten years or so a new mission swells up inside me. The growing distention says as much!

;)

As I travel the country, as I approach 50, as I realize how precious are my remaining days, I've lasered in on a single question:

If we put our money, talents, resources, networks, and our love and friendship together in one place, at one time, with one concerted goal (make substantial profit, have outrageous fun, while transforming our world), what would we be doing?

Naturally, those of us with children and spouses think of our immediate loved ones first. But, if we can, for a second, let's try to imagine something bigger than our families and ourselves. If we put all our chips on one goal, at one time, what would that project be?

An organization?

A business?

A community?

Media?

Structures?

Processes?

What?

How?

Where?

Why?

Friends, I believe we are at a turning point in not only our nation’s history, but in our planet's evolution. I won't recite the tired clichés we've heard the past 12 months. Those who read my dispatches know I am no fan of fluff, hype, or demagoguery.

But this moment is big and it is new. Because, for once, the self-serving egotists we routinely allow to represent us suddenly must admit, they "don't know." In Zen Buddhism, we look at "don't know" as the bedrock of true awakening. From an embrace of "don't know," manifold miracles can arise.

Friends, we are at a moment of epic "don't know."

And we are uniquely tasked with the opportunity to embrace it. We have the tools. We have the wisdom. We have the desire.

But, as I see it, each of us is pushing our own agendas. Often we are not talking to or with each other. We are talking AT each other. Or we are looking to our governments, or the newly elected U.S. President, or some other public person or entity, instead of to ourselves. No doubt many of our present efforts are admirable and fruitful. No doubt Adam Smith's invisible hand is guiding our disparate efforts to some common good.

But consider for a moment, what if each of us, and all those linked up to each of us, came together, without hesitation, without caveats, and with 100% focus, on a common endeavor? What would that endeavor be?

What is that one thing that unites all of us across religion, race, ideology, nationality, or background? What is it?

My initial stab at a response is here: http://www.resolved.tv

But it is incomplete. It needs you.

What do you think is vital? On what are you willing to put ALL your chips, all your assets, all your energy and goodwill? What is that one thing?

Please leave your responses in the Comments area here:
http://www.crottyfarmreport.com/display.php?item=245

And please feel free to share this question with others.

With utmost sincerity,

Jim Crotty

Well Hello Jim.... You are getting very analytical when all it takes is to realize the human brain drives every single person to have a very personal and separate opinion. When we are allowed to be a democratic nation in all of its grandeur... and a very grand and entitled thing that is, we then argue and vocalize what we believe in. It is simple yet complex. There will never be a nation with one voice, one opinion nor one goal. Just like a family of siblings, all are different and there isn't a thing to do to change that otherwise. If you find an answer to your quest that is legitimate in your mind, because there will be many legitimate answers that are right to some and not to others then you have attained your goal. It is the one thing that unites us that tears us apart! Karen Meeds

I think your group, our group, of committed people may want to look at creating a new network of news and information professionals. Look at www.spot,us and see how they are creating a community of funders for news and information. Imagine such a system of videographers and story tellers finding healthy, uplifting, insightful and important stories to tell. Mix that with some Studs Terkel for the video/YouTube age, a little Story Corps type of mentality and you start to get a comprehensive, entertaining and touching service I think many others are searching for and waiting for.

First off Jim... I love your movie trailors. I've been hearing about your debate team for a few years now and it was very exhilerating to see you and the team in action. You are all stars, that's clear. Keep on keepin' on ... it's going to be a great film. As for your question. The one endeavor I would love to see all people focus on at once is not an original idea. It was written at the oracle at Delphi: Know Thy Self. It's a life long endeavor to get to know one's Self, honestly, deeply, lovingly, with respect, with acceptance, with dedication to excellence at every level, with courage to carve away all the habits, and ideas and attachments that are not really part of our true Self and actually block the awareness of our true selves. The result would be emotional honesty. A rare commodity in our world. Each self is a magical one of a kind entity that has it's own sense of purpose and knows just what to do, just what is right for ourself. We may need teachers to help us see and experience our self, but it is there in each of us. Each self is connected to all the other selves. When each self is Self-ish,in the very best sense of the word, Completly Self-ish as in Completly like one's self, as in completely, courageously listening to one's self, that is when joy, purpose and community intersect. At the center of the self Self-ish and Self-less are one and the same. So for me the Grand endeavor that I wish everyone would join me on is for each and every one to wholeheartedly tune in to quiet the voice within, to listen our heart's as it were. And to commit to actually following it's guidance. No easy path, but the one of maximum joy and maximum evolution. Looks like you are onto something with that debating team..

Well, I've heard you're unhappy with the whole "new media" biz (from reading your posts) and I understand. Truly I do. I'm still not sold on your complete unbias, but I'll give you that one and not "talk at you." My concern is that Americans are uninformed. The media (the mainstream media) has failed to do its job. So like it or not, this "new media" is going to have to take up the gauntlet. If you haven't watched the video of "How Obama Got Elected" you truly should. It's posted at MY website under "How Obama Won" and shows just how uninformed (actually misinformed) his supporters were. Most actually thought the Republicans controlled Congress, and got their news from SNL. There were many other sad examples (things Obama stated were attributed to Sarah Palin, for one). Now we face a government with basically no checks -- completely controlled by the most radically leftist leader and Congress in generations. Socialist, even, if some have their way. Take a walk on the wild side and visit my site at http://tracykarol.com -- I'm not promising to be unbiased, because I've already formed my opinion about Barack Obama. But I am Independent, and I am a journalist. I've also done my research and come to clear conclusions. Call it my editorials, if you like. http://tracykarol.com -- other issues discussed as well, such as books, sports, and more to come.

Dear Jim, Your wonderful challenge says that you have "lasered in on a single question", and then you go on to ask many questions, and then, as with any good set of questions, you go on answer them all yourself. The answer to all your questions is your "Resolved" project helping underprivileged kids. That's it. That's all. Just do that with all your energy and you solve all the problems that can be solved. It's fantastic. I can also understand your motivation to put the "question" out to "us". Jim, there is no "us". We are only a reflection of your actions and understanding. You want to wake us and get us together, and you want us to prosper and be free, you want us to see our potentials, and you want us to stop wasting time and energy, and stop hurting each other. That is beautiful. Thank you! And the only way all that will work is to make sure, with every waking moment, you Jim Crotty, put all your "money, talents, resources, networks, and love and friendship together in one place, at one time, with one concerted goal" Doing that sends the message much more clearly than any blog no matter how well written can ever do. The answer to your question is in the title of this post itself. "The CROTTY Question". It is your question. You own it and if you take responsibility for answering it for yourself, you will enable us all. - Musho

Sorry, no answer to your quest! Human nature prevents it!

My reply to newest Jim Monk posting. A commune complete with koolaid? Just brain storming? My idea - buy a couple acres in Southern OR, build self sufficient energy and food producing infrastructure everyone gets whatever size http://weehouse.com/flash/SFWA_index.html#/2008/ they can afford and collaborate on whatever they can such as general world saving, awareness raising, money generating stuff. Try to find a place near surfing - I know a bunch of really smart recent college grads with green, media and economic degrees who might join in effort. hugs and happy Thanks day from the islands P.S. jim cool what U R doing with the debate team
