  THE COURTING OF LEBRON    And the Decline of American Empire

The courting of the NBA's self-proclaimed "King," Lebron James, has become a farce that says a lot about the mental state of America. First, King Lebron cannot even speak proper English. I am not asking that this guy be a MENSA brat, but I do wonder how he even achieved the 3.5 (or thereabouts) GPA he supposedly did receive in high school. With such a low standard of education, is it any wonder he doesn't have a clue? Or know how to ask meaningful and mature questions of the adults that have come to court him? We are pouring attention and billions on dolts in high-priced sneakers. It's really an indication of our nation's own lack of critical thinking skills;

2. The NBA is a me-first joke, with endless breaks for commercials that showcase vacuous egoism. Ditto for the NFL. At least baseball has the good sense not to interrupt plays for commercials, though the commercial breaks between innings are too long. The ONLY sport that has preserved some degree of non-commerciality is soccer, if only because there are no commercial breaks during play, and because the worship of the individual athlete (despite obsenely high salaries in European leagues for Becks here in L.A.) has taken back seat to team winning. Soccer, in time, will overtake the NBA as the favorite sport of educated Americans. The NBA will be the sport of the bling-bling me-first idiot. Heck, it already is.

You want a sign of the decline of American Empire? The worship of bread and circuses. The outrageous courting by grown men of a self-centered 25-year-old man-child named Lebron James is the epitome of that.

hey brother crotty . calling lebron Man-child is going to far. You could attack the system all you want but to demean someone because their playing the hand they have been given is man-childish in itself. Let me see would I rather be educated and work the office ball and chain for 45 mundane years of my life and stay with the same job I have no matter how void of enjoyment it is because I really have no choice or would I rather travel the country make hundreds of millions, take care of my family and do what I choose. He can retire whenever he wants and get the best education money can buy.
You are making my point, Latino Man. I do not believe, ala Obama, in manipulating the free market towards any one enterprise. If Americans want to reward NBA knuckleheads with obscene salaries over say, professors and border agents, so be it. But it says a lot about our priorities that this is so. What's more, an increasing number of black athletes are now calling for all NBA players to attend at least two years of college before entering the pros. It helps them develop humility and mental toughness, and prepares them for a post-basketball career. Talk to Kareem, Elgin Baylor, and Bill Russell on the subject. As we struggle to improve inner city education (see my documentary, www.crottyskids.com), it doesn't help that society honors guys who never even went to college, and probably cheated their way through high school (the way that LeBron mangles the English language suggests to me the dude had major help with his English class, if he took it all). The fact is, after he retires it's unlikely that LeBron will go back and get that college degree and learn how to talk like a truly educated citizen. He will be happy to be surrounded by his obsequious sycophants. That's okay with me. In America man should be free to live as he pleases. But we should also have the right to exclude the willfully uneducated in our midst, especially if such cretins delight in remaining vacuous, shallow, and benighted. One way I create that exclusion is by tuning out the pathetic NBA. And, if I was an NBA owner, I would apply a strict cultural literacy test. No what your basketball talent, if you fail the standardized test, you are off the team. We should apply such tests for driving licenses and other perks of American life. Then maybe our citizens will start to take seriously the importance of critical thinking. And we as a nation will rediscover greatness again.
